Buried in the Smith/Babb family cemetery a short distance N.E. of Jonesborough, TN. Possibly named after Samuel Jones Tilden (February 9, 1814 - August 4, 1886) who was the Democratic candidate for the U.S. presidency in the disputed election of 1876.

Joshua and Sarah together had 12 children all of whom settled in or around the Jonesborough, TN area.
John E. Babb Sr. (b. 1889) remembered visiting their graves as a small child. They were buried at Chases Crossing near Jonesborough.

Military Service:
At age 24, Isaac enlisted at Jonesborough on August 23, 1862 for three years and was mustered into service November 7, 1862 into Co. A, 60th Infantry Regiment (CSA) - Rank of Corporal. He was captured by the Army of the Tennessee on May 17, 1863 near Vicksburg, MS during the battle of Big Black River along with almost all of his regiment.
The 60th (also known as the 79th and as Crawford’s) Regiment Tennessee Infantry was organized October 1, 1862 with eleven companies, A to L. It was mustered into Confederate States Service November 7, 1862 with ten companies A to K, Company L not being accepted by the Confederate States authorities. The regiment was paroled at Vicksburg, MS in July 1863 and after exchange was assigned to Brig. General Vaughn’s Cavalry.
Isaac enrolled from the Confederate Prisoners at Camp Morton, Indiana June 11, 1863 in the 23rd Battery of the Indiana 8th Artillery Volunteers in the rank of Private. Fearing capture and execution as a traitor by the Confederacy Isaac deserted on September 17, 1863. He then enlisted under the alias "John Dunlap" in the U.S. Navy on February 17, 1864. He served as a Landsman on the Ohio from 02/17/1865 to 03/09/1864, on the Massasoil from 03/10/1864 to 07/28/1864, again on the Ohio from 07/29/1864 to 08/02/1864 and finally on the Tristam Shandy from 08/03/1865 until discharged on 03/01/1865. Under a special act of Congress, the Secretary of War was authorized and directed to remove the charge of desertion and Isaac was given an Honorable Discharge on June 23, 1898 for his service from June 11, 1863 to September 17, 1863.
Until the last few months of the Civil War, Fort Fisher kept North Carolina's port of Wilmington open to blockade-runners supplying necessary goods to Confederate armies inland. By 1865, the supply line through Wilmington was the last remaining supply route open to General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The Union army and navy planned several attacks on Fort Fisher and the port of Wilmington, but made no attempt until December 24, 1864. After two days of fighting with little headway, Union commanders concluded that the fort was too strong to assault and withdrew their forces. However, they returned for a second attempt on January 12, 1865. For two and one-half days, Federal ships bombarded the fort on both land and sea face.
On the fifteenth, more than 3,300 Union infantry, including the 27th U.S. Colored Troops, assaulted the land face. After several hours of fierce hand-to- hand combat, Federal troops captured the fort that night. The fall of Fort Fisher, after a massive Federal amphibious assault, helped seal the fate of the Confederacy. Isaac was one of 18 (possibly 22) from the Tristam Shandy that took part in the amphibious assault.  The Tristam Shandy was classified as held in reserve but participated in two assaults, the first under the command of Acting Ensign Ben Wood and the second under the command of Acting V. Lieut. F.M. Green.
Nearly blind due to cataracts and infirm from advancing age, Isaac needed to document his service as John Dunlap so that he could quality for a pension. After much "red tape" Isaac received his pension a short time before his death in 1899. His widow, Ellen Smith Babb applied for and was granted a widow's pension which she collected until her death in 1936. Below is a transcript of a letter from Isaac, alias, John Dunlap to one of his comrades.

I am trying for a pension and you will remember me as serving in the U.S. Navy with you on the Tristam Shandy as the ???? mate or blacksmith if you remember I assited you one evening in weighing out rashians & it was very stormy & the wave came over the foxal deck and washed my nose. I weighed 220# 6 feete high - of ruddy complection & blue eyes the reason why I enlisted under the name of John Dunlap was because I had been in the C.S.A. & did not want to be recognized if captured. I was one of the 18* who went & chged fort fisher with cutless & revolver under Lieut. Woods** & Smith. My proper name is I.N. Babb. Please make me an affidavit identifying me in your ship crew & c.and if any charges for this work send me the papers I ask for & I will send you the cash for your charges & trouble

John Dunlap

After the war Isaac returned to live in Jonesborough where he and his wife Ellen reared 12 children. He continued to practice his trade as blacksmith and dabbled in politics from time to time. On November 11, 1884, he was elected Justice of the Peace for the taxing district of Jonesborough.

Notes on James Wiley Babb
Occupation: Railroad and Farmer.
Church Affiliation: Presbyterian

James was a switchman on the railroad in Tennessee. He lost his thumb and finger. He then became a farmer, stump puller, night watchman in Omaha at the Omaha Box Co. Then he worked at Adams & Kelley on Nicholas St. He was killed by complications he suffered from an accident. A 16 year old boy driving a car in town (on 16th street) in Omaha hit and ran. James was hospitalized, released, and had complications which caused him to be hospitalized again. Then he died.
The James Wiley Babb family lived many places in Omaha: Abbott Drive & East Locust in the early years; a house where Zenith Nixon now is off Leavenworth (725 S. 33); 24th & Wirt, and on Hamilton.

Tenders, such as the CGC Juniper, had the solemn task of marking the wrecks of ships sunk by U-boats as hazards to navigation.

LARMON - Alberta (Kitten) Maude Ponzo, age 73 years. Died Wed., Sept. 8, 2004 at Hospice House, Omaha. Born Dec. 29, 1930, Omaha. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer Albert Ponzo and Jessie Hendricks Babb Ponzo; sisters, Muriel Isabelle May and Ethel Nadine Sutton. Alberta was a 1948 graduate of North High School. Alberta had a genuine love for life and was creative. Her creativity was given expression in beautifully crocheted and knitted works. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed traveling. Alberta is survived by husband, Paul W. Larmon; sons, Paul W. Larmon III and his wife Pat, Colleyville, TX; Ronnie D. Larmon, Omaha; Randal S. Larmon and his wife Kitty, Omaha; mother-in-law, Dorothy Anderson, Omaha; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild. Alberta will always be remembered as a very generous person, a loving mother, grandmother and wife, and a person who was loved by all who knew her.
