Reared on the Miller Borthers 101 Ranch near Ponca City, Oklahoma, "Gert" became a line rider at age 10. She was raised up among men and often said "women give me goose-pimples". By all accounts she could ride and shoot as good as any man.

She smoked fat black "cee-gars" (12 a day) and had a few night caps of bourbon before retiring at night after work. She said she acquired the taste for smoking cee-gars as follows: "I used to light my granney's cee-gars, she always smoked them and lived to be 80, on the ranch when I was just a kid. I started smoking 'em when I was 16".

During World War II she became a foreman at Cincinnati's Union Terminal and bossed a male crew of car cleaners. The eight men on her crew washed, swept, iced, and otherwise equipped 75 to 100 passenger and baggage cars during an 8 hour shift. One of her favorite stories related the time the train came through that was carrying President Harry S. Truman on his campaign for re-election.

She developed glaucoma in her later years and went completely blind. She believed that her blindness was caused by an accident on the railroad. A car which she was inspecting was hit causing her to fall and cut her head. The bluish scar that resulted and ran from her forehead to her crown was evident until her death.

Her second husband was PFC. James Morris Hensley, an Army aircraft gunner during W.W. II. He was as old as her oldest son, James Edgar Hacker.

Witness to the marriage of Gertrude and William was Flossie Wolfe.
