Our Friendship Quilt

Signature or Friendship Quilts were mostly a nineteenth century phenomena. They served as a means of staying connected with friends and relatives before the advent of the telephone and the Internet. This symbolic craft has had peaks and valleys since its heyday in the 1840's and 50's and just barely survives into the 21st century. It is unfortunate that so very few of these "records" are being produced today.

This particular quilt was the prize in a drawing to raise money for Corbin High School and was raffled off at a Fall Festival in 1932. The winner, John Dillon, and his identical twin brother Bill went to Corbin High for a time before moving to Savannah, GA prior to their graduation. After John's death in March 2006 at age 89 the quilt was acquired from his son and daughter-in-law. We are indeed pleased that it has made its way back home to Corbin after so many, many years.

The quilt measures 70 by 88 inches and has the names of many Corbin school children embroidered in red on its white squares. The squares have been stripped together with matching red fabric. Two of the squares have 12 names, one of which contains the names of the teachers of the time. Since married ladies could not teach school in the 30's one name in the A-3 block (Mrs Fowler) may have been the quilt maker. Our family members whose names appear on the quilt are indicated in red italics on the lists below.

It is evident that this historical snapshot from the the time of the Great Depression has been treated with much care by Mr. Dillon. . . it's new caretakers will most assuredly treat it the same.
